From Art to Landscape is an unusual and enormously generous book. W. Gary Smith, an award winning landscape architect and garden artist, has shared decades of his personal thoughts and process on art, landscape and garden design in this beautifully made book. Smith, a much sought after consultant to public gardens, collaborates with other artists, landscape architects and stewards of the land. The book reflects his ability to speak to people at many levels at once, honed over many years of teaching--from the heart. Teaching is the thread that draws his success together. Readers of this book will have the great pleasure of spending time with Gary Smith by reading this distillation of his many years of teaching students and clients/collaborators alike. Everyone comes away from an hour with Gary Smith seeing the world differently, more vividly, and through personal engagement rather than didactic instruction. The book reads easily and on many levels. Those looking for a how-to; will be challenged to find where their own sense of pleasure originates and to use simple exercises to creatively explore basic design processes. Those looking for inspiration will find vividly beautiful photographs, along with journal notes, thought process, story, sketches, diagrams, and the design process that lead to creation of deeply beautiful and emotionally evocative garden spaces. I've been BLOWN AWAY by Gary's writings, drawings, revelations, and inspirations.I find myself looking at the landscape with whole new eyes on the daily6:50 am walk, and seeing patterns in clouds and grasses with a hugesense of humor and awe. It may sound a bit giddy, but it's like I havelearned a new language.Gary's book is about garden design, but most importantly through his easy style he untaps a part of each of us that connects with nature through an intrinsic artistic and creative side that often gets sleepy in life's routines. It's wonderful to be awakened!

As a landscape architect, I find this book to be one of the best in recent years when so many landscape architecture books are simply a rehashing of earlier works. A true original!
