David Culp has written a great garden book detailing his copious experiences building and maintaining Brandywine Cottage. A great read on a rainy dreary day to get you excited for all the possibilities gardening has to offer. Covers everything from his passion for the more unique and eclectic perennials and bulbs to the overall design and principles behind the garden. David truly grasps what it means to be a gardener and someone who lives life to the fullest. The secret to finding true joy in life and gardening is working your piece of land day after day, learning that space, watching how it grows and matures, watching as it defies you, inspires you and surprises you! Much like raising a child, you can't control it, but you learn to work with it to establish your own paradise where what is meant to grow will and what you never could have imagined thrives!!

What a beautiful book!Full of glorious photos and a lovely story of a delightful gardener and his garden to go with it.The titled made me first buy this American book; as I have always been interested in garden design and how the plants are planted to give a layered effect. The photos by Rob Cardillo, (incidentally he also did the photos for the book on the splendid American garden Chanticleer), are a joy to see and study how the plants associate with each other.Actually, its a book I find myself referring to a lot over my New Zealand early summer season, nice ideas on every page.A well recommended read for gardeners all over the world. Most likely be the best book of the decade for me. Enjoy.

Attended a lecture by this author and was impressed with his 20-year old garden which started from nothing. I am using the book this winter to plan next year's constant perennial color. I wish the book were a bit more clear on do A / B / C. You need to listen to his chatting as if over coffee and dig out the gems. But it is a beautiful book with good information and I am eager to try some of his ideas. I will need to do additional research to see what will survive the deer in my Virginia garden. Not clear why the deer don't devastate his garden. But I would recommend it as one of the few books that tries to tell you how to keep color year long.
