Even though it focuses on small gardens and small garden areas, many of the projects can be implemented into larger gardens and stylish additions to landscaping. if you are like me, you might own several mosaic books. This one is one of my favorites! Here's why:Clear,concise directions with good pictures-most projects could be done by a beginner but there are also MANY projects to make a more advanced artist happy.Great variation of mosaics-this author covers some mosaics styles I've never seen in other books. Like making your own wire mesh base for cool animal mosaic sculptures-with enough how to pictures that even I can contemplate making one:), making several different shaped stepping stones-from scratch-these are GREAT-there are footprints and fish to die for. And unusual mosaic creations like windchimes and garden "cones".This book helps you to think outside the box and many of these projects would look wonderful outside or inside as well. Well worth the $13 bucks that Amazon sells it for-highly recommended!5 stars!

I thought it was very strange when someone gave me this book as a gift in that I don't even have a yard. Most of the house plants I've had over the years have died from either too little or too much watering. It felt like a gag gift. I'm surprised I ever even started reading it but once I did I couldn't put it down. I realize now that the reason I had so much trouble with plants before is that I never really accepted them as being alive and as a result treated them as if they were a painting or a sculpture. I've re-stocked my kitchen with plants and we're all getting along very well thanks to Ms. Sorin. It has added more than foliage to my life.

Getting in touch

I never really thought of myself as a gardner but reading Fran Sorin's book made me realize that it's not about a competition and trying to have the "best" garden on the block but about getting in sync with yourself through a connection with the earth. I get so caught up in a mad rush with work and just life in general but there is nothing like the process involved in growing things. I think I am more connected to my environment and my life through this simple but profound exploration of improving your life through gardening.

Really Inspiring

Ever since I moved to New York City I felt like I just didn't have any time to do things I used to enjoy so much. And I read about this book in USAWeekend and bought it and got so inspired that I bought two fica plants before I even finished the book. It reminded me of the time I used to spend with my Irish grandma out in the garden where I grew up near Peoria, IL. It filled me with life again, and not to get too honest, since reading Fran Sorin's book I have gotten the courage to break off a relationship I should have ended a while back. And I honestly feel I am ready to start and enjoy making my new life grow!

"The love of gardening is a seed that once sown, never dies"

The great Gertrude Jekyll was a woman of many talents - painter, photographer, craftswoman (embroidery, textiles, wallpaper design) but it was her achievements in garden design that established her legacy. Her love of gardening began at an early age and she experimented in her mother's garden for twenty years before building her own house at Munstead Wood and creating her famous garden. Her reputation was widened when she starting writing articles for "Country Life" magazine and designing gardens to accompany architect Edward Lutyens' houses. Their partnership was a dream one and led to the style known as the Arts and Craft Movement.This beautiful book covers Jekyll's life and influences and profiles Munstead Wood and many of the gardens that Jekyll particularly loved. Most of the photographs are exceptional black and white ones taken by "Country Life" photographer Charles Latham. Contemporary color photos are included of Munstead Wood as well as some of the other gardens that are still in existence today. A beautiful chapter about Munstead Wood is followed by "Gardens Old & New" which covers some of Jekyll's favorite gardens (St. Catherine's Court, Owlpen Manor, Little Boarhunt, etc.). A chapter on "Gardens for Small Country Houses" includes the remarkable Hestercombe and others. "Colour in the Garden" includes gardens where flower borders dominate, such as the Manor House at Upton Grey (breathtaking color photos), and Highmount, Surrey and Barrington Court, Somerset, just to name a few. A final chapter on "Garden Ornament" features photos of elements that Jekyll was known for, like pergolas, benches and water features. A stunning book!

Historic Overview of Gertrude Jekyll Gardens

Very few of Gertrude Jekyll's original gardens exist today but the book, taken from Country Life Magazine articles, provides excellent insight into her gardens and work with Sir Edwin Lutyens. The before and current photographs add to the understanding of the designs and her role in the design process. The book provides a good understanding of the English garden style and the people who helped create it.

I bought this for my mother for Mothers Day this year. She absolutely loved it since my husband and I were married in one of Gertrude Jekyll's gardens, and my mother often visits the garden on a monthly basis for a leisurely stroll. There are beautiful color as well as black and white photos. A great coffee table book, and an interesting read. Best for beginning gardeners, useful for experts

Gardening books for a broad audience are rarely successful. It's extremely difficult to present basic information for beginning gardeners that doesn't bore more experienced plantsmen to blindness. On the other hand, how many beginners have had to plod through chapters on advanced topics in so-called "general" gardening books - such as grafting rootstock or the family tree (no pun intended) of a minor succulent - just to find basic information on when to plant potatoes? And how often does one find right-way, wrong-way statements in basic gardening books that directly conflict with the statements made in the next book on the shelf, with no attempt to explain the rationale behind the recommendations?

Fortunately for all gardening addicts, Smith & Hawken's Book of Outdoor Gardening is the exception to the rule - at least the first half. Each chapter and sidebar successfully blends basic horticultural information with unique tips and techniques for the master gardener. This book is a handy reference tool for any gardener as he moves through the various stages of his craft. And where conflicting recommendations exist, the authors take time to explain how BOTH ideas are correct, but are dependent upon the circumstances. Good examples include the proper planting depth for roses, and the wisdom of using chemical fertilizers and soil amendments.

I've given this book 4 stars, for two reasons: First, as I've noted above, The Book of Outdoor Gardening is quite a worthwhile read for most gardeners. However, a novice would probably find it most useful, and for this audience the book should receive 5 stars. Expert gardeners will still find good information, but since this type of focused data can be found in specialty books, my rating for this audience would be 3 stars. Hence, a compromise 4 stars.

My second reason for giving 4 stars is the plant list that forms the second half of the book. This is a personal issue: in general, I find plant lists woefully incomplete and inadequate. In trying to please novice gardeners, who usually want information on traditional plants, and experts, who want detailed content regarding hard-to-find or hard-to-cultivate plants, the authors left out a number of important species in both categories. This is most likely due to space considerations; however, since purchasing the book - and using it frequently for the information in the first half - I've often had to refer to other books for plant information.

This book has answered all my questions, including soil preparation, plant selection, necessary tools, planting, and how to tend the garden. It even has information on propagating, containers and furniture. I highly recommend this book to the beginning gardener.

This book has some wonderful (and beautiful) ideas for your yard and patio. Instructions for making wimsical painted tables, bird feeders from natural materials, fountains from stock terra-cotta, trellises, how to build and decorate birdhouses, how to make windsocks and banners as well as ideas for container gardening, planters, hanging pots, water gardens and more, I think it's a terrific book for do-it-yourself types!

Outstanding Ideas

I picked this book up hurriedly and found it to be excellent. I have a gift shop that I have displayed some of my crafts that I made and I am unable to keep them in the store for the enjoyment of my customers. Everyone wanted to purchase the terracotta fountains especially. The book is easy to follow that any beginner would be able to do. I could not recommend it more highly.

A fun book to glance at....

Not very original but full of pretty pictures. I was hoping for more more creativity and artistic merrit rather than an apparent collection of "correct and staged" gardens.
