5A real treasure
By Christopher
Think of the most beautiful place you've ever seen in the world. The Amalfi Coast is more so, outrageously so. Readers may readily come to that opinion once they open Close to Paradise, for this oversize, color-soaked book is really a "virtual visit" to Campania, that region of southern Italy that includes Naples, Capri, and Amalfi. Readers lucky enough to have traveled to this area know that, if it were put to a popular vote on a beauty-measuring gauge, the needle would jam at the "garden" setting, for while the Neapolitans invented the very concept of dolce far niente---"the sweetness of doing nothing"---they also perfected one place to best do that: the garden. Outrivaling Babylon itself, Campania's gardens have thus been lovingly tended over the centuries by Bourbon kings, English lords, and barefoot contessas. Now, sensate to the region's extraordinary splendors, author and photographer Robert I. C. Fisher has showcased Campania's twenty grandest gardens in more than 200 "catch-me-while-I-swoon" (to use the author's phrase) vistas. His text traces the rich mosaic of garden history, which began with ancient emperors escaping overheated Rome by building pleasure palaces on the Bay of Naples. In fact, the first estate featured in the book sits on the legendary bayside home of Trimalchio---the freed-slave millionaire immortalized in Petronius' Satyricon---while the last, the Hotel Santa Caterina, provided an Edenic escape for the Burtons after filming Cleopatra in nearby Ischia. In between these two, the author profiles 18 other gardens by digging up the dirt---literally and historically---for juicy bits of gossip about a procession of princes and popes, glitterati, and, especially, literati. In particular, Campania "worked on English tightly laced inhibitions like four glasses of vino bianco," says Fisher. Wealthy Inglese, smitten with Campania's sunlight, soon colonized the region with spectacular giardini featured in this book: Lord Astor's Sorrento bayside estate, Lord Grimthorpe's Villa Cimbrone (the recent focus of Michael Holroyd's homage to Vita Sackville-West and Violet Trefusis, A Book of Secrets), Sir Francis Neville Reid's mountaintop Villa Rufolo (which inspired Wagner to write one act of Parsifal), and Sir William Walton's jungle-y La Mortella on Ischia. Then Fisher lays the icing on by including several famed private estates never published before, including Rudolf Nureyev's Li Galli islands and Villa Il Rosaio, Graham Greene's retreat atop Capri. While Fisher digs beneath the surface to unearth new knowledge, this is not the book for readers who wish to get dirt under their own fingernails: there are no tips about repotting begonias or watering tea roses. Instead, this book is meant for the "armchair gardener," the reader who is searching for inspiration and can find it in photographs that have an unequaled sense of place. Fisher must have spent months discovering the amazing diversity and riches of Campania's top floricultural masterpieces but with his new Close to Paradise, all those garden lovers who would like to make a pilgrimage to this Eden and are only able to take a small bite of this tantalizing apple will be able to take a "virtual" trip there whenever they like just by opening this mesmerizingly beautiful book.
