This book covers many topics related to the traditional English cottage garden without alienating the modern gardener. There are a great many color photographs which include overall garden shots and pictures of individual traditional cottage garden favorites, many of which are easily available in the U.S. There are also many color drawings with various cottage garden designs (aerial views) including the traditional cottage garden with primarily vegetables, a garden with fruits and vegetables and flowers, and flowers only and flowers and vines.

The book is well organized and is both charming and useful. If you are very visual you won't be disappointed with the combination of pictures and drawings.

The end of the book contains information on what garden tasks can and should be completed during the four seasons, and how to accomplish them, including a brief section on pruning. There is also a section included in this part of the book which gives traditional recipes and ideas about how to use the bounty from your garden, including dandelion wine, and mead. This book is a good read and there is plenty to return to again and again.

The Best True Cottage Gardening Book Around

I love cottage gardens, real cottage garden, not those perfect ones you see in some books and magazines that claim to be cottage gardens. I've read a lot of books about this topic and I found this to be one of the best, both in content and in photos and drawings. I found myself getting this book from the library so often that I finally bought myself a copy. I'm constantly looking through it when I'm wanting inspiration for my gardens, or when I need something to help get me through a long winter's evening. It's truly a charming book.If you like cottage gardens and like growing vegetables you'll be delighted by the garden plans and all the information, plant suggestions and photos in this book. The drawings of various cottage garden layouts in the back are really fantastic, as are the photos throughout the book.After reading through this book, you'll definitely find yourself dreaming of a small cottage surrounded by a riotous mass of herbs and flowers out front with a few hedges and a bountiful vegetable garden out back, and perhaps a few chicken running around.

Allergy-Free Gardening

Finally, an alternative to massive drug-therapy for folks with pollen allergies! Allergy-Free Gardening is a radical book, full of the valuable information allergy-sufferers need to excercise control over their immediate environment, the most likely cause of pollen allergies (unless you live in Tucson, where the city planted fruitless mulberry trees whose highly-allergenic pollen makes it impossible for some to go outside).

Ogren includes a comprehensive listing of plants and gives each an OPALS (Ogren Plant Allergy Scale) rating, so the informed gardener can now plant wisely and avoid plants that make people sick. OPALS is being used by the US Dept. of Agriculture in cities throughout the country-we can hope that with this new information, Recreation and Parks departments can begin making informed choices about what to plant in public areas so the likes of the Tucson fiasco is never repeated.

It's an indespensible guide for any allergy-sufferer who loves to garden, any gardener whose children or family suffer from pollen allergies, and should be required reading for all landscape architects. A real find!

Wow! This is an incredible book!!

I just finished reading and reviewing Safe Sex in the Garden, the newest book by Thomas LeoOgren. I had already bought and read (several times) Allergy-Free Gardening. I am becomming a real fan of this author, who I would say knows more about health and horticulture than any other writer I've ever read.Seriously, Ogren is that rare find, an original thinker who can write well. In both of his books thetext moves right along. It is almost like reading a good novel, except that as you read it,you are learning so many remarkable, often quite incredible new things.I have a friend who heard this author speak, at the Huntington Museum and arboretum, andshe told me that he is a fantastic speaker too. But that doesn't surprise me at all. In Allergy-Free Gardening you will see what has happened in modern landscapng, wheretidy plants (male) are so much favored over pollen-free plants (female). There is a hugesection in the book where many thousands of garden and landscape plants are discussed, andeach one is given an easy to understand allergy (1-10) ranking. Everyone I know who owns this book has put it to use, making their own yards allergy-free. I count this book as probably the most usefulgardening book I own, and find that I refer to it over and over, and not just on health matterseither. The culture of plants, how to grow them best, all this is well covered. I just can't recommend this book too highly. I wish that every single gardener, landscaper, allergist, doctor,and horticulture teacher owned a copy. The city arborists need to read this book too, sinceso often they are the ones who are planting all those allegenic, male, pollen producing street trees.This is a good one (as is the super intersting Safe Sex in the Garden) and if you have agarden and care about your own health, you'll simply love reading it.

The Most Important Garden Book of the Year.

Allergy-Free Gardening is an unusual new book, one that breaks new ground in an important way. I am an experienced gardener and I especially like the way this book is arranged. Everything is easy to find, perfectly understandable, and makes good sense. I find that the plant-allergy scale in particular makes this book highly useful. The author of this book, Ogren, has done a huge amount of work, and it shows. Surprising to me too, was the author's use of numerous interesting antidotes about different plants. This is a very well crafted book and everyone I've show it to has also been impressed. I would recommend this book to anyone with any interest in plants, gardening, and, or, allergy. The advice here will be invaluable in reducing allergies in cities big and small, and most of all, in the actual yards of the people who are smart enough to buy this book.

Excellent Reference for the Color Challenged!

The photography in Gardening With Light & Color by Marylyn Abbot, et al is stunning! Great care is taken with the choice of light (such as time of day) the choice of film - (obviously high quality) and the speed at which the image is taken. Truly, a professional photographer, with an eye for color has collected a beautiful journal of some very well planned and groomed gardens.

The artist has an eye for structure and design.

These gardens actually sing!

Because the writer is so conscious of these design elements- they are depicted in the choice of photographs and discussed within the chapters. The size of the garden is discussed and tips to avoid Dull, dreary gardens are discussed chapter after chapter.

These gardens create a mood which will be very helpful to anyone trying to choose what they want to do with their gardening space.

Another book- that I would NOT PART WITH!

A Jewel of a Book

Just when you think there is nothing new in the world of gardening books along comes a book that restores your faith. Marylyn Abbott's "Gardening with Light and Colour" is such a book. Ms Abbott has not one but two world class gardens - at opposite sides of the world. One is a lovly old English garden that she restored and the other is in the highlands of New South Wales, near Sydney, Australia.

The writer stated out gardening in Australia where seasons change abruptly, there are long spells of 30 degree heat and the sunlight is strong and harsh. Given the opportunity to restore an English garden blessed or cursed with the English damp and misty climate she says "I did not even have the sense to be terrified."

Where she found the energy to create and maintain, even with paid staff, TWO such gardens, and write a book I cannot imagine - but I'm glad she did. (Maybe she had nothing to do on the plane flying back and forth.) This is one of those rare boos that delivers exactly what the title promises; in this case how light and colour in two very different locations affect the choices made in landscape design and plant selection.

The writer has organized her material into eight chapters. The first five each feature a colour, or related group of colours and offer ideas on how best to incorporate them. Chapter Six, "A Rainbow Garden" is about potager gardening and working with the colours of vegetables and herbs. The last two chapters, "Light, Shade and Colour" and "Sparkling Light" talk about ways to work with the colours that already exist around the garden - the house walls, the colour of the soil, the foliage of large trees, shady places, winter light and the light reflected from water.

The tone of the book is light and conversational. The writer is knowledgeable without being infallible. She explains some of her mistakes and what she has learned from them so the reader is less likely to spend time energy and money making similar mistakes.

The illustrations are sensational, possibly the best I've seen in a gardening book. Not only are they great photography but they actually relate to he text.

This is a book both to enjoy and to learn from. Buy it for yourself or as a gift for a gardening friend..

I have just received my copy of A Time to Plant. I have long been an admirer of anything James Farmer does but this time he has more than topped my expectations! The book is glorious!!It takes me back to a kinder, gentler time when we all had time to spend with our grandmothers, garden and cook wonderful things. James Farmer has given me a breath of fresh air which isn't easy to come by at the end of another hot, humid summer.I can't imagine anyone not just loving having this book on their coffee table where it will be easy to pick up and gather inspiration on what to plant OR cook. Thank you, Mr. Farmer!!

I think this book is glorious. Can you be from the South and not have your life/book full of family? It does contain family recipes, and I just adore that part of his book. It's a coffee table book meet reference/inspiration -- meet cookbook. Full of real places and real "southern grown things" --I love it, and him. I will be giving as gifts.

Not your average garden book!

I've been waiting to see this book for months and I wasn't disappointed. First, it is beautiful to look at with engaging and often unusual photography (many of the urban gardens you wouldn't expect to see in a traditional garden book.) The gardens range from modern to more traditional but always with an eye out for sustainability. The author writes well and authoritatively on ideas like permeability, water usage, native plants but best of all the topic never strays far from how to make a garden beautiful. This is an excellent book for people who are looking for new ways to rejuvenate their backyards or start a new garden in a new property. Inspirational to gardeners both new and experienced. I loved the sections on street gardening and community gardens.

The photography is first rate and inspiring. An added plus is that many of the homes and gardens are in the San Francisco Bay Area, where I live, so it was extra-cool to see what some folks in challenging areas (hilly, clay soil, bedrock, wind, fog, more wind) were able to accomplish.But, the font. Oh my word. Or should I say, .. .. ..... That's right. Those little dots? That is the experience I had trying to read it. The nursery/bookstore where I bought this book had lighting so bright you could do microsurgery under it and that is exactly the type of illumination you will need before you can get past the first couple of lines. And a magnifying glass. Bring that too. I got the book home and wondered how the heck it could have shrunk during a short car ride. I can't read it and that kind of ruins it for me. I'm 53 and I can barely flail through it with reading glasses at a 200 strength.It may be "tomorrow's garden" but if you are over 20 years of age you will need yesterday's eyes to read it.

Good entrance, okay performance

Zen Gardening hits it off strong; Harte puts forth traditional ideas with a not-so-subtle twist - straying away from mystic mumbo-jumbo, opting for the vernacular of the everyday joe. Following many Japanese and Chinese organizational techniques, the author presents simple additions and mods to almost any abode as well as full and luscious decked-out, fully landscaped projects. Some far fetched, and some less so, all are very pleasing to the eye. The illustration and photography in this book are superb. This is a good book to dwell on; pragmatic applications are not this book's strong points.

but not the only one to own. Wonderful images and good explanation of philosophy, but if you are wanting a nuts and bolts, this is how to do it, this book is not the one. I would add it to a collection of several. I have read it a number of times times and get more out of it each time.

Great ideas

My book is so filled with post-its marking which ideas I'll be emulating. It may take awhile, but it'll be worth it if my front yard ends up anywhere near as beautiful as some of these pictures. I'm looking forward to enjoying my front yard in a private garden setting, just like I enjoy my back yard. It's mine to enjoy, not to work like a dog on just for the neighbors benefit!Editing to add - it is now three years after I originally posted this review. I used many of the ideas learned from this book, and it sparked many of my own! My front yard looks like a park, I love to look out my windows and enjoy. Even a walk to the mailbox has become a serene experience because of the lush gardens and plantings.People drive through our neighborhood, stop in front of our house and I see them looking and pointing at different gardens, etc. We'll be selling our house to retire in a couple of years, and I feel confident that our place has tremendous "curb appeal" because of what I learned and implemented from this book.

Great primer, great pictures!

This is a really good first book on front yard gardens and has some excellent pictures. If you're thinking of adding a little life and color to your front yard, striving for some curb appeal or just plain tired of mowing the lawn, pick this up. Easy to read and written in a nice relaxed style, it's a good starter.

Ohhhhh! Excellent!!

I can't begin to say how much I adore this book!! I'm telling you now, if you read this book from cover to cover & allow yourself to digest each & every picture, you'll never look at a front yard the same again. Literally, American is stuck in a rut. I look up & down my street, & all I see are blank, bland, boring lawns!! Wretch! This book has made me realize something that took me directly out of that silly, traditional mindset: I PAY AS MUCH FOR MY FRONT YARD AS I DO MY BACKYARD! This book has motivated me to "reclaim" my front yard for my own use, & I can't wait to have it all in & done! It won't be my neighbor's front yard anymore! It won't look like public domain anymore!!!
