A must have for the photos alone!

Sunset, the bible of west coast gardening, finally comes east and it is well worth the wait.

As the owner of a home on a desolate, windswept acre, I have bought over a dozen landscape books and magazines looking for inspiration. I could have saved alot of time and money and just bought this one.

So well written you could sit down and read it straight through. And so well organized and indexed you can use it for quick reference.

It covers everything from planning to installation. Includes many sample plans with plant lists. But the best thing about this book is the PHOTOGRAPHY. The photos are stunning and plentiful. Most photos are refered to in detail in either the main text or a side bar and the photos actually pertain to the topic (which is most unusual for this type of book)!

A Plethora of Gardening Ideas

The reader is offered a plethora of gardening ideas through attractive and plentiful photographs. Numerous garden types, garden designs, structural elements, and plant life are discussed in this book. However, by covering such an extensive variety of garden topics, the reader never gains an in depth appreciation of each particular garden style. This book will provide a complete overview to gardeners uncertain with which particular garden style they wish to pursue. Once the selection is made the reader would be better rewarded with purchasing a garden book dedicated to the chosen garden style.

Great book for yard landscaping. Sunset does a good job of making gardening solutions straight forward and simple. Also, wonderful photos and diagrams of garden layouts. We just moved into a new house and wanted some ideas for flower, shrub, and path layouts. The book was a few years old, but did not matter, and was in excellent condition.Rich

Best garden book ever

This book was recomended to me by my local horticulturelist from the nursury. I got here on amazon and it is the best gardening book I have ever read. And I have a lot of garden books.In depth how-to's on everything from how to palnt a tree to how to prune almost any paticular shrub. With great illustrations from start to finish. It really is a great book. I highly recomend it as well.

Great Resource for Native Plant Enthusiasts

If you live in the Intermountain West, you live in a land of contrasts. From snow-covered mountains to parched dry desert playas and everything in between. The one thing you never see naturally, is large green fields of grass, except perhaps in mountain meadows. The area was settled under the idea that the desert would bloom if modern water use techniques were used, and the settlers did an amazing job of utilizing the scarce water resources and did in fact make the desert bloom.However this blooming did so at a great cost to wildlife, and greater demands are put on this resource than ever as human population growth continues unabated in this region. In an interesting turn of fate, there has been a growing movement to try to reduce water use and to utilize plants native to the region in a way that is asthetically pleasing as well as being environmentally responsible.This book makes a great effort to provide people who live in the region some ideas to help them accomplish this. The book starts by discussing the different regions, such as desert valleys, foothills, mountain meadows, etc. and what plants have evolved to adapt to the conditions unique to these areas. The book goes on to discuss landscape principles and how the shading and sun exposure of different areas of a typical suburban landscape makes application of native plant species in different areas of the yard feasible and attractive, and in such a way where water consumption is reduced.The book goes on to provide some examples of native trees, shrubs and perrenials that can be used in native landscapes. The list isn't intended to be all inclusive, and provides some related species with the plant descriptions. The book also details the benefits and uses of the different plant species.As a starting point for native landscaping here in the intermountain west, I give this plant a hardy endorsement. Many of the plants listed in the book, I have used successfully in my suburban landscape and am very happy with the results. We don't live in England, and we don't need a yard that looks like we do. Native landscapes are more beautiful and vibrant than any well manicured angloscape, and require less water. This book will help readers learn how it can be done.

A well-rounded design manual and how-to

While I love having a minimalist patch of organic lawn in my backyard for the cats and chickens to run around on, as a landscape designer I am thoroughly "over" using lawn as the default option. It takes more maintenance, fertilizer, and water than just about anything else in the landscape, yet it gives nothing back to wildlife, has little character, and in many cases, is nothing more than a sad-looking expanse for neighborhood dogs to decorate.I've never walked past a lawn and been wowed. At best, lawn acts as a neutral space which helps to highlight the beauty of the landscaping around it. There's really no competition as to which I'd rather see: a lawn or any style of landscaped bed. Even the most pedestrian combinations of hardscape with plantings still draw my eye, make me think, and increase my feeling of connection to my neighborhood and to the natural world.That's why I am so excited about this new book. The author, Pam Penick, is a landscape designer in Texas who's written a complete design guide full of inspiring ideas and practical how-to for reducing or eliminating lawn in your front or back yard.She starts out by sharing a number of different possibilities for how you could re-landscape of garden area without using lawn. I mean, in most gardens lawn takes up a huge amount of space. What do you put there? Can you afford to make the change? Pam goes into the details of how to design with lawn alternatives such as no-mow grasses, groundcovers, and small perennials or shrubs, then delves into hardscaping such as patios and pathways. One of my favorite sections is the one on incorporating ponds, play spaces, and other fun features into your lawn-free landscape.The second section goes into the practical matter of how exactly to remove your lawn, prepare your beds, plant, and maintain your new space. Pam's coming from an environmentally-friendly perspective, so while she does mention Roundup as a last-ditch alternative for people with terribly invasive varieties of lawn, the rest of the solutions are safe for pets and kids as soon as the power equipment shuts down.The third section is one of the most useful to me personally as a landscape designer, which is how to contend with skeptical neighbors, HOAs and city codes, and other issues surrounding the politics and safety of going lawnless. I'm lucky enough to serve on a design review board which is exceptionally encouraging about going lawn-free, using low-water plants, and choosing natives, but many homeowners have irresponsible HOAs or city codes which require the use of lawn or even outlaw native plants. Pam's tips on how to work with any obstacles you may come across are realistic and helpful.The book finishes up with some plant recommendations for all of the different areas in the United States. Because planting advice is best when it's regional, Pam enlisted the help of a number of professional designers around the country to give plant suggestions which truly work. I can vouch for both the California and the Pacific Northwest plant ideas. While each region only has about five plants suggested, they are practical picks and there's enough detail given on how to actually use the plants that the section is helpful in getting started. You could take the list to your local nursery and use it as a starting point for discussion with your local professionals to give them an idea of what types of plants you're looking for.The only criticism I have of the book is that I wish the section on grassy alternatives to lawn was larger. I have heard of a number of interesting no-mow grasses in the last year, and this book only touches on a few. I'd love a chart listing the different types for each region and their cultural needs so I could begin recommending these no-mow lawns to clients.Because Pam is a landscape designer, the strength of the book is truly in the design inspiration she provides. Every page has photos, and many of them are full-on landscape shots which actually give you an idea of how you might design your garden. The photos are from a number of regions and a number of designers, and show creative ways of using gravel, stone, and recycled materials such as urbanite (reused concrete) in harmony with plantings.Once again, if I were a homeowner wanting ideas for my garden, I'd use the suggestions given as a jumping off point to discover my tastes. After you see in the book's photos that you like decomposed granite or urbanite, you could go on Pinterest or do a Google image search to find more ideas along those lines.Overall, this is a great overview of all the topics you'll wonder about when considering how to reduce or eliminate the lawn in your life.

A beautiful resource

As a follower of Pam Pennick’s DIGGING blog, I’ve been anticipating the Lawn Gone book for some time. I wasn’t disappointed! Most of us are either in the midst of experiencing a water drought or are looking for ways to conserve water in the yard. If you find a high water bill for maintaining a lawn is frustrating or unfulfilling, Lawn Gone is a great resource. Pam’s presentation of ideas and strategies are straightforward and easy to follow. And one of the best elements of the book is the plentiful and vivid color photos that will inspire whether you are avid gardener or a homeowner just looking for some landscaping ideas.

Not enough Detail

I was looking for info on how to design and DIY a large gravel back patio. This book is not what I thought it was going to be. It is maybe a good option for high-level learning about different materials and plants, but I could have easily done that online. I thought this was going to give more details, go into different DIY steps depending on the type of 'thing' you were building. It focused on all the wrong items in my opinion. It just breezes over a lot of things that left me wanting for more. After going through the book (didn't read word-for word throughout), but I feel I know no more than I did before I ordered it.Maybe it would be a good reference if you wanted to know more about plants, maybe.

It is not by chance that amazing events happen in life, it is destiny.Receiving this book as a gift was like sitting with an old friend; comfortable enough to tell secrets yet wise enough to share surprises. It was destiny that we meet and enjoy our company.As an experienced gardener I have combed every nook looking for someone to give more than just directions on how to plant without requiring us to learn Latin!A master to share their faults and revelations and inspire us to try something new is what we all need. We can grow Magnolia's as grand as in the south while living in the north? Just try! Combine roses with clematis, they love each other? This book covers many topics related to the traditional English cottage garden without alienating the modern gardener. There are a great many color photographs which include overall garden shots and pictures of individual traditional cottage garden favorites, many of which are easily available in the U.S. There are also many color drawings with various cottage garden designs (aerial views) including the traditional cottage garden with primarily vegetables, a garden with fruits and vegetables and flowers, and flowers only and flowers and vines.

The book is well organized and is both charming and useful. If you are very visual you won't be disappointed with the combination of pictures and drawings.

The end of the book contains information on what garden tasks can and should be completed during the four seasons, and how to accomplish them, including a brief section on pruning. There is also a section included in this part of the book which gives traditional recipes and ideas about how to use the bounty from your garden, including dandelion wine, and mead. This book is a good read and there is plenty to return to again and again.

The Best True Cottage Gardening Book Around

I love cottage gardens, real cottage garden, not those perfect ones you see in some books and magazines that claim to be cottage gardens. I've read a lot of books about this topic and I found this to be one of the best, both in content and in photos and drawings. I found myself getting this book from the library so often that I finally bought myself a copy. I'm constantly looking through it when I'm wanting inspiration for my gardens, or when I need something to help get me through a long winter's evening. It's truly a charming book.If you like cottage gardens and like growing vegetables you'll be delighted by the garden plans and all the information, plant suggestions and photos in this book. The drawings of various cottage garden layouts in the back are really fantastic, as are the photos throughout the book.After reading through this book, you'll definitely find yourself dreaming of a small cottage surrounded by a riotous mass of herbs and flowers out front with a few hedges and a bountiful vegetable garden out back, and perhaps a few chicken running around.

His writing style is so personal and idiosyncratic, fun to read, if only for his use of the English language. Would have loved to meet the man, quirky and excentric. I have many of his books, and will strive to complete the set.
