Dogscaping introduces the idea of creating a beautiful landscape that will also work for your dog. Found throughout the book are a variety of ideas. Some were weird, like suggesting artificial turf in the middle of your yard where your dog has a regular run. But some of the tips were very helpful. For example, building codes require the balustrades on a deck or porch to have spaces no larger than 4 inches wide so children don't get their heads caught. Author Tom Barthel points out that your dog may still get stuck and injured in that spacing. A good reminder.Worth reading for the beautiful pictures and snippets of useful information, I found the book to be somewhat disjointed. A large part of the book relates to organic gardening and composting. While eliminating toxic chemicals will create a more healthy environment for both dogs and humans, it felt a little tacked on.I would have liked to see more information about plants that hold up well to traffic and more ideas for dog-friendly structures (the pooch pergola and sand digging pit were both great). I guess I finished reading Dogscaping looking for a little more.

I was somewhat disappointed with this book. It's okay and does provide some good info but I was hoping that it would be more about dog-proof landscape designs than it was. I did read the reviews before I bought it so I got what I got!

This book is short on detail but big on pictures. I didn't find it very helpful in terms of what to do in my backyard. There was some limited information on plants dangerous for dogs, but a more extensive list can be found online. If you're thinking seriously about pet friendly landscaping you're going to need a thicker book, this one if for people barely at the considering stage.
