By Bonnie Helander
I was so thrilled to receive as a gift from the Peachtree City Garden Club my copy of Coach Dooley's new book, Vince Dooley's Garden: The Horticultural Journey of a Football Coach. My friends even got the coach to pen an inscription! As a graduate of UGA (back when Coach Dooley was head coach of the football team) and as an avid gardener, this book combined my two great loves. I was fortunate to visit Coach Dooley's garden when it was part of a garden tour last fall. The book adds to my appreciation of his garden by telling the story of how his journey in gardening began. The photos are beautiful and the paintings by Steve Penley are breathtaking. You know it has to be a great garden, with the input from famed UGA horticulturists, Michael Dirr and Allan Armitage! I have not visited the Dooley Sculpture Garden as yet at the university but the chapter in the book on this garden really makes me want to plan a trip soon! I also want to tour the campus to see all the trees in UGA's arboretum. Everyone who loves gardening will appreciate this new addition to the gardening scene. And, if you are a lucky Georgia grad, you will be doubly blessed!

By Midwest Book Review
Vince Dooley is best noted as the football coach for the University of Georgia Bulldogs where he led the team to play in twenty bowl games, winning six SEC championships, and being inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. What is not so well known is that Vince Dooley is also an accomplished gardener. Written by Steven Penley and superbly illustrated with color photography and Penley's own paintings of some of Dooley's gardening achievements, "Vince Dooley's Garden: A Horticultural Journey of a Football Coach" focuses upon the former college football coaches more than twenty years of gardening activity. A fascinating read, "Vince Dooley's Garden: A Horticultural Journey of a Football Coach" is especially recommended to the legions of Dooley's fans, and will have much of exceptional appeal for the non-specialist general reader with an interest in gardening as well.

By gi
Contrary to popular belief, intellectually gifted people are not monomaniacally devoted to a single subject and lost when they venture beyond it. The truly gifted football coach is likely to achieve at a high level in any endeavor to which he devotes himself. The unadvertised feature of this book is that it gives an example of this truth and affords the reader a clear view of why it is true. "Vince Dooley's Garden" would be a good addition to a list of required readings for students preparing to teach gifted students as well as a fine addition to any serious horticultural library. In this case the football coach par excellence became the gardener par excellence. Coach Dooley has an insatiable curiosity and had always taken academic courses in the off-season, mostly in history. And then one semester, he took Professor Dirr's course in woody plants in the horticulture department at the University of Georgia. The challenge of plant nomenclature and of learning the unifying characteristics of groups of plants captured his imagination, and he devoted himself to mastering material for which he had no previous background. The task was daunting, required hours of work, Dirr's encouragement helped. Gifted teacher met gifted student, and the result has been a remarkable horticultural adventure. Not one that is remarkable for a former football coach, but one that is remarkable for anyone. Dooley's garden is home to rare species and cultivars, plants almost impossible to obtain or so new they are only now being offered in the trade. So he writes from a position of horticultural authority, and any gardener will learn from his book. The chapters on hydrangeas, Japanese maples, camellias, and viburnums are stand-outs, but the chapter on conifers that will grow in the South is particularly interesting for the insight it provides into new efforts to produce conifers that can take the heat of Southern summers. This book is not so much about the layout and plant list for Dooley's garden as it is about the gardener's passion for horticulture and his unceasing pursuit of knowledge about plants, generously shared in its pages. Along the way, the reader discovers the names of nurseries devoted to the cultivation and development of various plants----hydrangeas, viburnum, japanese maples, camellias, for instance, and he learns about the merits of cultivars in each plant group. Under the aegis of Dirr and Allen Armitage, Dirr's counterpart at Georgia in herbacious plants, Dooley the gardener has visited special gardens both in the U.S. and the rest of the world. He seeks out growers at industry shows, visits nurseries like Don Shadow's in Winchester, TN, where seminal work is being done. He acquires one of three existing cultivars of a plant. He loses a winter daphne, but having learned why (too much moisture), he plants others more prudently. He gives up on a hydrangea whose blooms are hidden by its leaves and moves it from the main path in his garden. Dooley is unfailingly generous with valuable information, perhaps because he has been the recipient of so much generosity. In other words, don't buy this book only because you are a fan of Georgia football. This is a valuable garden book, one that I believe will stand the test of time, much like Elizabeth Lawrence's books, but in a gardening world richer than even Lawrence's. And though its author has become an exceptional horticulturist, it is written in the plain prose of a practical gardener whose passion drives his language. One of the small things that suggests the practical quality of the book is Dooley's praise for the now-famous---some say infamous---Knockout family of roses. Pretentious gardeners eschew such common plants, but Dooley has planted Knockouts throughout his garden for banks of color and praises their faithful bloom. I first heard Vince Dooley's name when I was a graduate student in English at Auburn and he was initiated into the history honorary society with my husband. The next time I heard it, I was doing doctoral work at the University of Georgia, and Coach Dooley had been hired to revive a dead football program at that university. He brought integrity, discipline, energy, and great intelligence to that program. Within the year, he transformed a program riddled with scandal and plagued by loss. The same qualities that made him a singular coach make him a singular gardener.I recommend this book to all gardeners who are not content with one blue mophead hydrangea, who like to grow interesting plants, who wonder where to go to find them. If your passion for gardening has flagged, this book will revive it.It is so much more than its promotion suggests.
