Getting that personal touch from your guide is the best scenario, but what about when you're on vacation, and you want to visit some local garden hotspots? It is good to have a guide, if not in the flesh, then on paper. Jo Ellen Meyers Sharp's, The Visitor's Guide to American Gardens: Garden Walks, Garden Talks, Garden Events, which Cool Springs Press sent me to review, looks to be just the ticket. The guide is organized by state and also in Canada to assist in locating gardens while you're on vacation, or any type of tour. In my own state, Jo Ellen listed the best of the best. Myriad Gardens and Crystal Bridge, for example, just underwent a huge restoration and recently reopened. I was pleased to see she also listed the new Oklahoma Centennial Botanical Garden located just outside of Tulsa. Because three of the five gardens listed in Oklahoma are in Tulsa, it made me wonder why Oklahoma City and her surrounding suburbs don't do more to establish great gardens.

Do you visit gardens when you travel in the U.S. and Canada? Do you take destination garden trips?We do! And, I know many other people who do.Whenever we plan a trip we go online and look for nearby gardens, butterfly houses arboretums and notable parks. This much needed, up-to-date book from Jo Ellen Meyers Sharp will become well-worn in our house.Not only is the basic information provided on a state-by-state basis but a smart phone icon is available on some pages to provide more on-site tips. (We don't have smart phones so the Internet will have to continue to be our guide for the additional info.)So to use the guide, go to the state you'll be visiting, then to the city and its gardens. You'll find the address, phone, website, hours and whether or not there is an entry fee.A line of icons tell you whether or not there is food, a children's garden, historic identification, annual events, hiking trails, gift shop wheelchair access, etc.The garden description tells you the size of the garden, its specialized features, and, well, everything you want to know.This calendar year we have visited 8 or 10 public gardens around the country and they are all in Sharp's book and reflect our experience of being there.

This is a great book for those who love to travel or love to garden or do both! The Visitor's guide to American Gardens had detailed information about each garden with symbols of accessibility, fees, collections, children's gardens,food and much more! For most of the gardens listed there is even a QR code in the book, allowing you to link to the gardens website. Beautifully photographed with pictures of almost every garden as well as a summary of each. It's a great gift for a gardener or a gift for yourself!
