I am disappointed that her book seems to be another organic gardening primer. I was hoping for a summary of the latest thoughts on gardening and sustainability. I grow for the farmer's market and don't have much time to for research, but seem to know as much as the author.For example, the author didn't talk about sequestering carbon by building soil. The author does mention that trees sequester carbon and thus are good for our climate. The author does tell us how to build up our soil organic matter to improve fertility. The author tells us not to burn our garden waste, instead to compost it. But she doesn't say that that composting sequesters carbon.We've known for more than a decade that more carbon is stored in soils than terrestial vegetation and the atmosphere combined. Long enough for the UN to update their graphic of the carbon cycle. [...]The UNEP graph shows that soil carbon loss is a huge source of emissions, more than fossil fuel use. Soil carbon, and thus soil fertility, is depleted by both plowing and using chemical fertilizer. But organic farmers build soil organic matter and thus sequester carbon. Agriculturalist Allen Yeomans says that if we all built up our soil organic matter by 1.6% then atmospheric carbon dioxide levels would decline.There is no mention of biochar, which seems to really help my depleted, acid soil and which sequesters carbon forever.I gave her three stars because some people need a primer. I like her mention of the German mound (burying wood waste and planting on top of it) to slowly fertilize from the bottom.

If you're looking for a solid understanding of the ecological principles behind landscaping with a light carbon footprint, this book offers a grounding in the basics. As a landscaping professional, I'd classify most of the information shared as being the sort of thing most of us pros understand intuitively, but most homeowners and non-pros find hard to learn or understand. So the fact that Alice Bowe carefully explained all of the foundational principles in green design makes this a book worth buying for most homeowners. It covers the basics of gardening with an eco-friendly twist, and shares how to source and use appropriate materials and plants in the garden.One element that I particularly appreciated was her emphasis on good design, because without good design, we cannot effectively educate our friends and neighbors about the benefits of gardening for wildlife or gardening in a sustainable way. The photos in the book illustrate her concepts stylishly, and make eco-friendly landscaping appealing and fun. After my first night with the book, I was rushing off into my own garden to re-create a few of her projects and suggestions. I particularly adored the attractive home for overwintering insects on page 178 and can see myself suggesting that project to my landscaping clients (I'm a landscape designer).A few of the topics Bowe covers include:How to attract beneficial insects and natural predators (of aphids and others) into the gardenUnderstanding what attributes make a plant wind- or drought-resistant so you can choose appropriate plants at the nursery, even without having seen them recommended for that purposeHow to make a simple green roofOrganic control of slugs and snails, weeds, and eco-friendly gardening with deer and other animalsHow to grow your own food, herbs, and cutting flowersPlants that will withstand flooding and wet feetSoil amendments and additives that are sourced in an eco-friendly mannerCreating more plants from seeds, divisions, and different types of cuttingsWhich hardscape materials are the most eco-friendly and which might also be easy on the budgetEco lawn careSustainable mulch materials and how to find themPorous materials for use in the landscape and why percolation is so importantStylish rain barrels and composting systemsHow to make natural swimming ponds and other water featuresFire-retardant landscapingI will make one quibble with the book, and that is that the author discusses how to attract wildlife, without mentioning the benefits of native plants in attracting the specialist insects and birds that can only breed or feed on specific plants they've evolved with. It may be that this is a difference in how American and UK gardeners approach this topic, but to my understanding, native plants are the number-one thing one can do to attract wildlife and make an ecological impact with our gardens, because it helps those birds and bugs that are most needful of our assistance. Seeds and berries are nice, but only feed generalist species that aren't actually threatened in any way. So I was disappointed about that.But if you read this book in concert with Timber Press' The New American Landscape, you'll come away from the experience with the philosophical understanding of the concepts as well as the practical how-to needed in order to create a gorgeous landscape in keeping with environmentalist values. Overall, this is an easy-to-understand how-to guide in creating a garden that helps rather than hurts the environment.
